This is reminiscent of my memoir and push and pull of my life growing up very poor and becoming middle class, of meeting Jane who was clearly out of my league. The subtle shifts of loss that sent me backwards in fear. The current state of the world and going against all my LA friends in favor of the working class voters that the Fox viewers have become.

I distinctly remember Dave's father complaining about having to "eat all those 'eenie foods'." I grew up around Italian families and that term describing Italian cuisine made me laugh out loud. Cinzano was a well known international distiller of vermouth. But the Madison Avenue agency that handled their advertising in the US created a super cool aire about the company.

Definitely one of my favorite films! I loved the theme of honoring the different parts of ourselves even as they might feel like a foreign language.

Thank you for this. Mike’s monologue, on watching the football practice, captures all of this, perfectly.

Great post! I grew up in a college town in Butler County in the 60’s and 70’s and Breaking Away had a special resonance (we were called Townies). Still one of my favorite films
